Patients’ files left at public dump

Four community hospitals are investigating how thousands of patient health records, some containing Social Security numbers and sensitive medical diagnoses, ended up in a pile at a public dump.

The unshredded records included pathology reports with patients’ names, addresses, and results of breast, bone, and skin cancer tests, as well as the results of lab work following miscarriages.

By law, medical records and documents containing personal identifying information must be disposed of in a way that protects privacy, and leaving them at a dump is probably illegal, privacy lawyers and hospital officials said. Violators face steep fines.

Hard drive destruction ‘crucial’

The only way to stop fraudsters stealing information from old computer hard drives is by destroying them completely, a study has found.

Which? Computing magazine recovered 22,000 “deleted” files from eight computers purchased on eBay.

Freely available software can be used to recover files that users think they have permanently deleted.

While Which? recommends smashing hard drives with a hammer, experts say for most consumers that’s a step too far.

Criminals source old computers from internet auction sites or in rubbish tips, to find users’ valuable details, and a number of recent cases have shown the dangers in disposing of second-hand equipment.

The most straightforward solution, according to Which?, is complete destruction - but it should be noted that destroying the hard drive could release toxic materials when smashed so this is best left to a specialist company that can guarantee destruction of data and safe disposal of the waste.
